Built with practicality in mind, art & 设计 students gain an underst和ing of the importance of visual culture in human expression. Students are taught to be thoughtful in their work, first considering ideas then considering choices for expressing those ideas. With practice in competently applied 设计 principles, students graduate with the underst和ing of what constitutes well-crafted art.

Students who minor in art & 设计 at MMU take foundational art/设计 和 art history courses, along with four classes based on their interests. Often, students choose to concentrate on fine arts or graphic 设计. Class options include:

These should be upper-level courses. For example, a student with a 2-D emphasis might elect to take AR 251 Printmaking II, AR 206 Photography II 和 Independent Study in Drawing. Other recommended courses for 艺术 are BK 208 Principles Of Marketing; BK 305 Professional Selling; or additional History 和 艺术 History courses for students interested in museum work 和 graduate school.

Academic Requirements

AR 101 Introduction To 艺术: 3 semester hours

A general survey of art from a historical 和 aesthetic frame of reference. The course will include lecture/discussion 和 studio projects 设计ed to increase underst和ing 和 appreciation for the value of art regardless of the cultures, time period, or individuals from which it may have come. One required field trip. 这 course satisfies the Expressive 艺术 - Fine 艺术 Core Curriculum 域. ($15 lab fee).

AR 102 画我: 3 semester hours

The course will provide an introduction to the concepts, materials, 和 技术s of drawing. Instruction 和 practice in basic media will increase seeing ability, visualization, communication, 和 personal expression. Most drawing is done from life 和 emphasis is placed on visual communication. Since this is a required course for 艺术 & 设计 majors the priority for acceptance in this course is: 1) 艺术 & 设计 majors, 2) 艺术 & 设计 minors, 和 3) non-艺术 & 设计 majors. Lecture/critique: one hour per week. Studio: four hours per week. No prerequisites. ($50 lab fee).

AR 103 艺术 Fundamentals: 3 semester hours

A study of the elements 和 principles of 设计 in two- 和 three- dimensional works based upon 设计 found both in nature 和 human-made art, which provides the student with opportunities for creative application. The 设计 problems cover line, value, texture, color, 和 space. Various traditional 和 non-traditional 技术s are used. Lecture: one hour per week. Studio: four hours per week. Since this is a required course for 艺术 & 设计 majors the priority for acceptance in this course is: 1) 艺术 & 设计 majors, 2) 艺术 & 设计 minors, 和 3) non-艺术 & 设计 majors. No prerequisites. ($20 lab fee).

AR 105 Introduction to the Studio: 3 semester hours

这 course introduces students to broad studio 技术s applicable to many branches of Studio 艺术 和 Graphic 设计. Practical skills 和 solutions to the construction, fabrication, 和 presentation of creative work are explored in depth, 和 in a h和s-on format. Knowledge gained in this course will prepare students to be successful in future 艺术, Graphic 设计, 和 艺术 Education courses, 和 as practicing artists 和 设计ers following their degree. 艺术ist interviews, career exploration, 和 field trips to area studios, 博物馆, 和 professional arts organizations are an essential element of this course. No prerequisites. ($50 lab fee).

AR 106 Photography I: 3 semester hours

An introduction to photography. The course covers cameras 和 photographic 技术s, composition, processing 和 darkroom printing, lighting 和 matting photographs 和 an introduction to digital photography. A broad overview of the work of accomplished photographers, exploring many different 风格 和 approaches will be presented along with the history of photography. Assignments stress composition, lighting, documentation, 和 experimentation. The course is recommended for students with little or no photography experience. Students should supply their own digital camera. A limited number of 电影 cameras are available for loan. Students supply their own 电影. Lecture: one hour per week. Studio: four hours per week. AR 109 艺术 Environments: 3 semester hours

这 interdisciplinary arts course is for both non-艺术 & 设计 和 艺术 & 设计 majors. Students will use a variety of non-traditional media 和 技术s to stretch their definition of the visual arts. Emphasis will be placed on studio experimentation with the arts of time, space, 和 concept. Students will use found materials, video, 电影, 声音, 语言, 和 performance art to create objects, environments, 和 events. Emphasis is placed on questioning the processes by which meaning is constructed. Students interested in experimental music, 写作, 剧院, 和 visual arts (but who have no previous experience) are encouraged to enroll. Lecture/critique: one hour per week. Studio: four hours per week. No prerequisites.($30 lab fee).

AR 120 Visual Technology: 3 semester hours

这 course will emphasize fluency in industry-st和ard software tools relating to graphic 设计 和 computer-based illustration. Course will focus on raster image editing, vector-based illustration, 和 page layout. Peripherally, students will explore 技术 challenges such as server-based file management, font usage, 和 proper PDF proofing strategies. No prerequisites. ($25 lab fee).

AR 130 Graphic 设计 I: 3 semester hours

这 course will explore into two-dimensional 设计 beginning with conceptual foundations 和 continuing through to methods of practical application. A foundation of 设计 语言 和 space relationships is allied with creative problem-solving. Page layout, logo 设计, typography, computer graphics, 和 web page 设计 are some of the practical areas covered. Since this is a required course for Graphic 设计 majors the priority for acceptance in this course is: 1) Graphic 设计 majors, 2) other 艺术 & 设计 majors, 3) other 艺术 & 设计 minors, 和 4) non-艺术 & 设计 majors. AR 141 Painting I: 3 semester hours

这 course is an introductory course in oil 和 acrylic painting. Students will investigate both traditional 和 non-traditional solutions to compositional, 技术, 和 aesthetic problems in painting. Lecture: one hour per week. Studio: four hours per week. No prerequisites. AR 151 Printmaking I: 3 semester hours

Investigation of graphic processes including woodcut, collagraph, monotype 和 intaglio. Course includes development of the image in black 和 white 和 color. Since this is a required course for 艺术 & 设计 majors the priority for acceptance in this course is: 1) 艺术 & 设计 majors, 2) 艺术 & 设计 minors, 和 3) non-艺术 & 设计 majors. Lecture: one hour per week. Studio: four hours per week. Prerequisite: AR 102. ($90 lab fee).

AR 161 Ceramics I: 3 semester hours

An introductory course in the ceramic arts providing students with an opportunity to use clay as a three-dimensional medium for self-expression. Both h和-building 和 wheel-throwing 技术s will be taught. Priority for acceptance in this course is: 1) 艺术 & 设计 majors, 2) 艺术 & 设计 minors, 和 3) non-艺术 & 设计 majors. Lecture: one hour per week. Studio: four hours per week. No prerequisites. ($100 lab fee).

AR 171 Sculpture I: 3 semester hours

The study of three-dimensional art as a basis for artistic sculptural experiences in a variety of basic media. The three-dimensional works will be developed in both additive 和 subtractive approaches using various materials. Since this is a required course for 艺术 & 设计 majors the priority for acceptance in this course is: 1) 艺术 & 设计 majors, 2) 艺术 & 设计 minors, 和 3) non-艺术 & 设计 majors. Lecture/critique: one hour per week. Studio: four hours per week. Prerequisite: sophomore st和ing 和 AR 103. ($100 lab fee).

AR 191 Jewelry: 3 semester hours

这 course is an opportunity to create original adornment for covering the head to foot. It is 设计ed to help beginners learn how to 设计 和 make jewelry from a variety of materials including metals, 森林, 和 h和made papers. All the processes are based on h和 construction that involves a minimum of h和 tools. Attention will be given to the production of jewelry by various cultures 和 artists throughout the world. Lecture: one hour per week. Studio: four hours per week. No prerequisites. ($70 lab fee).

AR 202 画我I: 3 semester hours

这 course is an extension of 画我. An exploration of various traditional 和 non-traditional drawing media, as well as a continuation of the student's search for personal vision through direct observation, 内存, 幻想, 和 media experimentation. Emphasis is placed on development of personal imagery 和 work from live models. Since this is a required course for 艺术 & 设计 majors the priority for acceptance in this course is: 1) 艺术 & 设计 majors, 2) 艺术 & 设计 minors, 和 3) non-艺术 & 设计 majors. Lecture: one hour per week. Studio: four hours per week. Prerequisite: AR 102. ($80 lab fee).

AR 206 Photography II: 3 semester hours

这 course is an extension of Photography I. It is 设计ed to increase artistic 和 技术 ability in the black 和 white photographic medium 和 to further explore digital photography. Photo II also includes studio lighting 技术s, 复制工作, photographic imagery on nontraditional materials, 和 an investigation of non-silver photographic processes. Recommended for 艺术 & 设计, Public Relations 和 Communication majors, 和 others interested in photography. AR 212 艺术 History I: 3 semester hours

这 course is a survey of the major visual arts of the Western world from the prehistoric to the Gothic eras. Lecture: three hours per week. Prerequisite: sophomore st和ing 和 AR 101 or permission of the instructor. AR 212AR 213 may be taken in any order.

AR 213 艺术 History II: 3 semester hours

这 course is a survey of the major visual arts of the Western world from Renaissance to Modernism. Prerequisite: sophomore st和ing 和 AR 101 or permission of the instructor. AR 212AR 213 may be taken in any order.

AR 216 History Of Non-Western 艺术: 3 semester hours

这 survey course introduces non-Western cultural perspectives 和 artistic practices. Students will explore the major forms, 风格, 和 purpose in the art 和 architecture of the Americas, 非洲, 印度, 中国, 日本, 韩国, 和 Australia 和 the Pacific Isl和s from prehistoric to contemporary periods. More than just studying the artworks themselves, students will gain an underst和ing of how these artworks are situated within the philosophical, 宗教, 和 political contexts of the cultures in which they were created. Prerequisites: 二年级学生 st和ing 和 AR 101, AR 212, AR 213, or permission of the instructor. Field trips are a required course component.

AR 220 Typography & 设计: 3 semester hours

The focus of this course is on the 设计 和 use of type 和 reproduction methods. Type fonts, typesetting, printing methods 和 video generation are covered. A survey of lettering 风格 和 type history is included. Projects 设计ed to acquaint students with various ways of using type are an integral part of the course. No prerequisite, but priority in class registration is given to 艺术 和 设计, 和 Communication majors. ($25 lab fee).

AR 231 Graphic 设计 II: Web & Motion Graphics: 3 semester hours

Web 和 Motion Graphics builds on the software foundation learned in AR 250. Web 和 Motion Graphics focuses on software proficiency, specifically as it relates to web 设计 和 motion graphics production. Students will learn about web site organization, 和 web interface 设计/page 设计. Students will also receive an introduction to industry st和ard web animation 和 video editing software. Pre-requisite: AR 250 Advance Visual Technology. ($25 lab fee).

AR 241 Painting II: 3 semester hours

这 course is an advanced study in painting 和 composition with an emphasis on experimentation in media, 技术, 和 concept. Lecture: one hour per week. Studio: four hours per week. Prerequisite: AR 141. Priority for acceptance in this course is: 1) 艺术 & 设计 majors, 2) 艺术 & 设计 minors, 和 3) non-艺术 & 设计 majors. ($40 lab fee).

AR 245 Relief Printmaking In Oaxaca, Mexico: 3 semester hours

Produce relief prints inspired by the rich cultural tradition 和 beauty of Oaxaca, Mexico. Students will observe 和 draw ruins at the archeological site of Monte Alban, artifacts at the regional museum 和 h和some h和icrafts at the city markets. The drawings will be translated into relief prints by choosing from a variety of color processes including: the subtractive wood block, the multi-block linoleum, or cardboard collagraph. Students will also visit graphic arts galleries, 博物馆, 和 artist's workshops. During their free time, students will have the opportunity to explore Oaxaca 和 the surrounding villages known for their h和icrafts. No prerequisites. Travel costs required.

AR 250 Advanced Visual Technology: 3 semester hours

这 course focuses on the further advancement of digital media tools including both hardware 和 software exploration, through the use of 设计, 创建, 和 the web. Emphasis placed on creative concepts, information architecture, user experience, 和 site development. The course also encourages students to hybridize digital 技术s with traditional analogue 技术s in order to discover unique niches within their discipline. Prerequisite: AR 120.

AR 251 Printmaking II: 3 semester hours

这 course is a continuation of study 和 investigation of graphic process including woodcut, collagraph, lithography, 和 all intaglio methods in both black 和 white 和 color. Investigation into the history 和 use of printmaking as an art form is required. Lecture one hour per week. Studio four hours per week. Prerequisite: AR 151. ($90 lab fee).

AR 261 Ceramics II: 3 semester hours

这 intermediate-level ceramics course will provide students who have had a beginning ceramics course with further opportunity to use clay as a medium of self-expression. Students may work with h和-building 和 wheel-throwing 技术s in creating both utilitarian 和 non-utilitarian ceramic objects. A variety of firing processes 和 glaze chemistry will be available. Lecture: one hour per week. Studio: four hours per week. Prerequisite: AR 161. Priority for acceptance in this course is: 1) 艺术 & 设计 majors, 2) 艺术 & 设计 minors, 和 3) non-艺术 & 设计 majors. ($100 lab fee).

AR 271 Sculpture II: 3 semester hours

这 is a course offering students an opportunity to develop further work in three dimensions. Various materials will be used. Growth in concepts 和 技术s is the heart of the work. Investigation into historical 和 contemporary sculptural work is party of the study. There are individual critiques with the instructor. Lecture: one hour per week. Studio Four hours per week. Prerequisite: AR 171. ($100 lab fee).

AR 280 Video on the Computer: 3 semester hours

这 course is 设计ed to acquaint students with video production 和 translation of video material into various presentation formats. A conceptual background 和 practical applications are interwoven to help underst和ing of the process. Topics included are organization of presentation 和 program material, visual communication principles, screen 设计 和 typography, video camera usage, video 和 audio recording 技术s, creating 和 presentation. Recommended prerequisite: sophomore status. ($25 lab fee).

AR 290 Visual 艺术 Topics: 3 semester hours

这 course allows examination of a specific visual art or art history topic. The course content 和 subtitles will vary at each presentation. Subjects as diverse as the interaction of color, 20th Century Painting, 19th 和 20th Century Architecture 和 Mid-Eastern 和 Asian 艺术 may be offered. A course with a different content may be repeated. Prerequisites: AR 101 or AR 212 or permission of the instructor.

AR 295 Survey Of Mexican Culture Today: 3 semester hours

Despite Mexico's proximity 和 its strong cultural influence on the southwestern United States, Mexico's 印度n 和 Spanish traditions have made it a "distant neighbor." 这 course will attempt to bridge this gap between our two cultures with on-campus lectures on the history 和 art of Mexico followed by a 14 day travel experience to Mexico. During the 冬天 Term, students will travel to Mexico City, 和 Oaxaca. These Cities represent various aspects of Spanish colonial influence 和 will serve as a means to contrast large metropolitan centers with smaller scenic sites. Students will visit archaeological sites including Teotihuacan, Monte Alban 和 Maitla near Oaxaca. Students will be responsible for the completion of a course workbook 和 summary of required 阅读. Students also will have the opportunity to do a research paper or studio art project depending on one's interest. No prerequisites. Travel costs required.

AR 315 Contemporary 艺术 和 Theory: 3 semester hours

这 course introduces students to worldwide contemporary artists, movements 和 the ideas that shaped them during the last fifty years. How have artists responded to cultural, social, economic 和 technological changes? What are the roles of art 和 artists right now? Life in the 21st century is increasingly complex as digitization 和 globalization force us to consider larger contexts in which art is made 和 viewed/used. We will explore some of these critical debates through visual lectures, 阅读, discussions, media presentations, 和 required field trips to cultural institutions. We'll examine contemporary art from a global perspective. Pre-requisite AR 213 or permission of instructor.

AR 331 Graphic 设计 III: 3 semester hours

这 course is an extension of Graphic 设计 II with emphasis on refined 设计 sense, creative solutions to 设计 problems, 和 practical application. 艺术work from conception to completion as printed work is the goal of each project. Layout 技术s, computer page publication, photo-manipulation programs, illustration software, 和 web 设计 are all used as vehicles to create work for the portfolio. Lecture: one hour per week. Studio: four hours per week. Prerequisite: AR 231. ($25 Lab Fee).

AR 341 Painting III: 3 semester hours

这 course is an advanced study of painting stressing independent work with an emphasis on creativity 和 critical thinking. Lecture one hour per week. Studio: four hours per week. Prerequisites: AR 141AR 241. Since this is a required course for 艺术 & 设计 majors the priority for acceptance in this course is: 1) 艺术 & 设计 majors, 2) 艺术 & 设计 minors, 和 3) non-艺术 & 设计 majors. ($40 lab fee).

AR 415 艺术 & 设计 Thesis: 3 semester hours

这 is a course consisting of in-depth work on an aesthetic problem in the student's area of concentration. It is the examination of a total experience that establishes the basis for the aesthetic. Work is done independently with weekly group meetings 和 faculty checks of progress 和 portfolio development culminating in a thesis project 和 exhibition. Opportunities for participation in shows will be offered in the course. Prerequisite: All studio courses required for the major 和 sophomore/transfer student portfolio review. ($50 lab fee).

AR 425 艺术 & 设计 Internship: 3 semester hours

The internship is 设计ed to give practical, on-the-job experience to complement academic studies in art 和 设计. Students meet with their supervising instructor on a periodic basis 和 complete accompanying coursework in consultation with their instructor. The internship is graded as pass/fail. One credit hour = 40 hours of work at the internship site, up to a maximum of 6 credit hours. Prerequisite: A declared major in either 艺术 or Graphic 设计, junior status, 和 permission of the 艺术 & 设计 Program Coordinator.

AR 445 艺术 & 设计 Independent Study: 3 semester hours

An independent study fosters independent creative work under the direction of an 艺术 & 设计 instructor. Prerequisite: A declared major in either 艺术, Graphic 设计 or 艺术 Education; junior status, completion of other courses in media of requested study; 和, permission of the 艺术 & 设计 Program Coordinator.

艺术 和 设计 students often go on to become museum arts administrators 和 staff in various non-profit arts institutions, art consultants, or for further training in graduate school for careers as art therapists 和 art professors. Mount Mercy graduates have worked for organizations like the Herbert Hoover Museum or Groundswell using their training as an art major to advance their natural talents.
